Tempest Raised
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (December, 2000)
Author: Lizzy Shannon
Average review score:

Both Sci-Fi and Romance fans will love this one!
Lizzy Shannon's Tempest Raised was written by a woman with a wild imagination. She skillfully guides her readers through competing plot- and time-lines in which characters and even worlds have been--and still can be--changed at the drop of a time rift. Her descriptions of time manipulations, transporting mechanisms, and other futuresque technology are familiar enough that they make sense, but different enough to be original. She makes the lushly foliaged planet Sicaadia come alive with vivid description, and small details such as the chairs and clothing necessary to accommodate alien anatomy add a great deal to the authentic feel of the universe she creates. She also does an exceptional job "fleshing out" her Zav~rindi (lion-like) and Sicaadian (reptilian) humanoids and the political tensions between their worlds.

Shannon's main character, Stevie, is a curvaceous, feisty woman reminiscent of a romance novel heroine with one major exception: she has difficulty remaining faithful to one true love, whether he (or she!) shows up with or without a tail! Shannon is adept at portraying both human and alien lovemaking with erotic flair, and the "good bits" are tasteful yet juicy. As for the love story--and there is one--well, there's a unique twist to the typical romantic ending. I can't wait to tune in to Lizzy Shannon's next novel (and I'm sure there will be one) for further adventures.

A Must for anyone's book collection!
Lizzy has the most enchanting way of weaving the plot of Tempest Raised that draws you into the story. I was able to visualize Stevie and Brantt and all the other characters and their worlds. I couldn't put this book down! Each chapter keeps you guessing what will happen next. I can't wait for the sequel to see what adventure and romance Stevie will find for herself next.

Fantastic
Praises for Lizzy Shannon,Her first book and she writes like a master. She is destened to be one of the greats. This book is fast paced with lots of plot twisting to keep you guessing about what will happen next.I just couldn't put it down.

The Alaska Mother Goose (Last Wilderness Adventure)
Published in Hardcover by Paws IV Pub (February, 1992)
Authors: Shelly Gill, Shannon Cartwright, and Shelley Gill
Average review score:

The Alaska Mother Goose
Having this book since I was a baby, I have loved it up until now. I think I always will! The Alaska Mother Goose, by Shelly Gill and Illustrations by Shannon Cartwright, is a book filled with different rhymes about animals, and the habits that they do in Alaska.
The book describes each animal, starting out with snow geese, then to the end with a child, gazing at the Northern Lights. The poems are hilarious and lighthearted. The sea otter floats without a care, the black bears mouths turn blue from eating too many berries, and a porcupine's prickles get filled with berries from sitting on a cranberry bog! At the end of the book, there is a glossary filled with every animal mentioned in the book describing its name, and what it is.
If you want to get your child more familiar with animals, I think this book is perfect. It's very realistic and informational! Humorous at the same time.

a must have for nature and Alaska-lovers!
Wonderful, fun book... animals who live in Alaska each have their own nursery rhyme that describes the animal and its' habitat. Illustrations are fun and some of the rhymes are hilarious. I loved the book so much I purchased it while on my honeymoon before our children were even conceived! Definately unique. Different than other books in that both the child and the parent enjoy reading this book.

It's wonderful
As you may guess from the title, this book is comprised of variations on Mother Goose rhymes with a theme of wildlife found in Alaska. The author has a wonderful command of words and I love the images she creates. The delightful illustrations compliment the text well. The rhymes have the charm of traditional Mother Goose rhymes, but are mixed with inspiring images of nature rather than images of violence (the baby and cradle falling, etc.). I am so happy to have run across this book.

The Bold Stroke
Published in Paperback by Triple Tree Publishing (November, 1999)
Author: Barry Shannon
Average review score:

Amazing Work!
I absolutely could not put this book down! From cover to cover I was hooked: The mastery of Shannon's writing style painted vivid images in my head, and kicked-started my imagination like no other book has in a very long while.

The boldest adventure on paper I've ever been on in my life, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read at the edge of their seat, and be salivating for more when they're done! It's been a while since an author could stir me up like this...a most welcome change for everyone who's tired of the S.O.S. that clutters much of our bookshelves today. Great job, Barry Shannon!

Damn the paradigm, I say...
The tale takes us to places we'd probably best never seek in person, but come wonderfully to lusty life in Shannon's seemingly simple style. Readers will wait as anxiously as will I for the further adventures of JOAT St...John; remarkably, the tale pushes the rather two-dimensional universe of the medium; The wry and apt turn of phrase, the hilarious juxtaposition of events, and the relentless insouciance of the auctorial voice seem to surpass the restrictions, taking this reader more for a flight into, through, and about marvels, than just a drive along the tired turnpike. This one carried me straight through, but already I'm going back for another look at scenes that may be experienced again and again, albeit vicariously. Shannon enters august company, nay even julian enclaves, with other paradigm- pushers such as Laurence Sterne, Richard Condon, and Thomas Perry, each uniquely enriching the volume of the reader's experience. Bold Stroke came to me as a gift, one that encourages me to hang out in anticipation of the next one; even the cover art enhances the package to the benefit of the beholder. Behold and enjoy!

Bold Stroke Scores (in my book!)
Barry Shannon has written a captivating tale with all the ingredients needed to hook me on the first page and keep me entertained all the way through. His accuracy and attention to detail is significant but never gets in the way of the action. I really liked this one and would certainly recommend it. Good show, Shannon!....hope you write another.

Cycling Across North America: A Leisurely Route from Coast to Coast
Published in Paperback by Van Der Plas Pubns (April, 2000)
Authors: Lue Christian and Shannon Christian
Average review score:

A "must" for cross-country bikers & armchair travelers.
Lue and Shannon Christian's road trip adventure, published as Cycling Across North America: A Leisurely Route From Coast To Coast, begins in Fresno, California and picks up Route 66 to Illinois, and then travels through Indian and Michigan, then on into Canada, finally finishes up in Quebec City. The Christians averaged 53 miles a day, totaling over 3700 miles in all, and with very little climbing. But it is much more than just a pleasant travelogue adventure, it also services as a superlative planning guide for others seeking their own sense of wonder in a cross-country trip by bicycle. By following their established routes, fellow travelers can enjoy the sights and pleasures the Christians found when they made their three month journey. Cycling Across North America is valued and pleasurable reading for armchair travelers, and a "must" for anyone seeking a successful and memorable cross-country bike trip of their own.

Inspiration to follow in path
At age 36, I would love to be able to do a ride such as this, but would never have the time to plan it. But, now I have the dream of one day doing this ride with the help and inspiration of the Christian's guide. Hopefully, I won't have to wait 'til my spouse is 60...maybe we can take our passel of kids and see America sooner than that.

This guidebook has so much detailed information on what the ride is like, where to stay and where to eat. I half-way expect to have the names of all the host families.

A long needed guide for the recreational cyclist to make a safe journey across a great country!

An expert cross-country guide for all!
This new book by the Christians is well written, easily understandable, with their special form of dry humor laced throughout. I am not a cyclist, but am interetested in cross-country travel and their book, complete to a fault, also works well for people who would like to explore America by car, motorcycle or Motorhome.

The wisdom of their preliminary scouting trip as descibed paid off in this being a usable carry-along whenever one heads out across America. The Route 66 information makes it valuable for junkies of that historic highway.

The maps are detailed and understandable, and the elevation changes are marked so those on two wheels can plan their days.

This will make a good bookshelf reference for all travelers!

Going for the Gold: Shannon Miller (An Avon Camelot Book)
Published in Paperback by Avon (June, 1996)
Author: Septima Green
Average review score:

This is a very good book!
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. It makes you want to try you best at the sport. I enjoyed this book very much. I would recomend it to everyone!

Going for the Gold: Shannon Miller
Although Septima Green's book is written merely for children, as a 19 year-old gymnastics fan, I found it very enjoyable. This book was written before the Atlanta Games so it is a bit outdated. However, it was an excellent book on an excellent person. The book is very inspiring, showing in detail Shannon's years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. I enjoyed getting to know Shannon as a person then a gymnast. I also liked the reading about Shannon's family, her relationship with her coaches, and friends

Going for Gold: Shannon Miller
This book was excellent. It showed the real Shannon Miller. It gave perspective into her life and what she has went through to get where she is. She is truly the most magnificent gymnast ever

Healers of the Wild: Rehabilitating Injured and Orphaned Wildlife
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (July, 2003)
Author: Shannon K. Jacobs
Average review score:

A wildlife rehabilitator's world.
How great that a second edition of Shannon Jacob's "Healers Of The Wild" has come out. It is so much more than just a "guide for young people..." as she modestly states on the cover of her first edition.

While there are many heartwarming success stories in which injured, orphaned or abandoned animals have been successfully reintroduced to the wild, there are also stories of man's stupidity causing harm to some of nature's most innocent creatures.

For those brave enough to wander into the depths of a wildlife rehabilitator's world, a life-altering experience awaits you on the pages of this book, through the anecdotes and accompanying photographs.

Not being able to read this book again for the first time, I must be content to read it anew, for no other reason than to relive the warm, fuzzy success stories.

This book is a keeper.

Kudos to Shannon Jacobs, and wildlife rehabilitators everywhere.

Excellent Resource
As a wildlife writer who writes about animals in their natural setting, I found Jacobs' book on rehabilitators to be fascinating and informative, bringing the story of what happens to creatures when they have a run-in with humans, but are fortunate enough to be aided by these caring folks. As a birdwatching columnist, I am asked all the time about what to do when they find a baby bird. This book's "I Found A Baby Bird" flow chart is very good, and I am recommending it to my readers.

Indispensible Reference for Living with Wildlife
Healers is a must-have: concise, clearly-written, and easy-to-read. I consider it a critical reference for anyone whose life is touched by wildlife in some way, shape, or form. The book has tons of helpful information, addressing all the panic-stricken questions you have at that fateful moment when you happen to cross paths with an injured or orphaned creature. It's just the thing to grab in a wildlife emergency and the flow charts in the book that help sort out what action to take are the best I've ever seen. I've used these charts many times in dealing with wildlife emergencies, so I consider the flow charts alone to be well-worth the price of the book. Plus the updated edition has even more information than before. It's a real quality publication. As far as I'm concerned it's an indispensible wildlife reference and I wouldn't be without it.

73 Ways to Improve Your Employee Communication Program
Published in Spiral-bound by Davis & Company (01 December, 2002)
Author: Jane Shannon
Average review score:

This book's a ... (that's a good thing)
... Its small size, spiral binding, plain vanilla typography, and crude drawings said this was a silly, lightweight, even childish work. WRONG. It's filled with lots of good pointers -- succinctly put & engagingly written. Shannon blends hard info & clear opinions with easy commentary & light humor. But, the mustard yellow & black color scheme doesn't do it justice, and the illustrations detract. As one interested in communications generally, I found this book surprisingly helpful.

Amazed and delighted
This was a splendid read. I'm a senior PR professional and think that I knew it all. But I learned so much from this book, I ordered 20 copies for my staff. I'm tempted to quiz them next time I do a performance review. Jane's writing is delightful in a perplexingly amorphous way. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as I basked under my heat lamp.

Great way to start off the new year...
My New Year's resolution is to keep this book handy, refer to it often and put Jane's tips into action. It's a fun read with great ideas on how to communicate more effectively. You're gonna' love it!

Marietta and the Creeping Nasties
Published in Paperback by Charles E Walters Co (December, 2002)
Author: Shannon Perry
Average review score:

Excellent Book for Kids and Adults
My nine-year old son and I both read this book and loved it! Marrietta is a wonderful character, full of spunk and smarts. The suspenseful plot kept the pages turning. The author has such a wonderful imagination. My son and I can't wait for Shannon Perry's next book!

Delightful read!!
I was enchanted by the storyline of fantasy, magic and adventure. It's very easy to read and quite entertaining. I highly recommend it for your children as well as adults trying to recapture their childhoods.

Amazing Heroine!
Marietta and the Creeping Nasties is an amazing tale of mystery, fantasy, and magic! The heroine, Marietta, is an earthgirl who arrives in the fantasyland called, Incunabula, to save the land from the Creeping Nasties. There she encounters good and evil. She is a strong, vivacious teen protagonist, who you can't help but love. Along her journey she is faced with a variety of obstacles, but succeeds beyond her wildest dreams. She acquires good friends and realizes that her strength is within.
As a third grade teacher, I read this book to my students. Each day, it was hard to stop reading it. My kids would yell, "No, Miss Keenan, don't stop!" There are so many suspenseful turns in the plot and it keeps you on your toes. I've been teaching for ten years and have read countless books. I can honestly say that this is the best book for young people that I've read. It even surpasses the Harry Potter series. I especially enjoyed the fact that the hero is a female. However, boys and girls alike will be swept away with this magical tale. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any person, young or old.

Silence on Fire : The Prayer of Awareness
Published in Paperback by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (April, 2000)
Author: William H. Shannon
Average review score:

PRAYING TO BE AWARE
Awareness is boundless. Awareness has no limits. Any limits of awareness that we experience are limits of our own contrivance, self-imposed boundaries that must be transcended. The content of awareness by its very nature excludes all that is not itself. Content is limitation. A given sound, for example, excludes not only silence, but all that is not sound, and all other sounds. However, it is seductively easy to view awareness in a conventional way, not only as something that is focused upon a given sound but as constituted by one's relationship to the sound. In this view, awareness itself is a category defined by its possible contents. This is tantamount to determining the limits of awareness. If we encounter a point at which our senses seem to let us down, or our mind boggles and we must retreat, we then interpret it as having reached the limits of our awareness. We experience it as an encounter with content or subject matter that cannot be grasped. What usually escapes our attention here is that awareness itself is not bounded. Once we do distinguish awareness from its objects, then the limitations of any given object or content of awareness do not in the slightest limit awareness. And if we realize that awareness is not limited by the contents of awareness, we need no longer experience the limitations of content as the limitations of awareness.

As soon as one can let go of the identification of awareness with its objects, or of the mind with its contents, boundaries vanish on every side. Instead of boundaries there is a new lightness and clarity. This is the boundless, this is emptiness, that which contains everything but is itself not anything. This is inner awareness and absolute reality. This is the pure essence of mind...This is the book's message, transcending to awareness through meditative prayer.

Gained a Renewed Understanding of Contemplative Life
My confessor(priest)gave me a copy after confession. I read it, got my own copy, and gave him back his. This book gave me "the philosophy" in ways no other reads ever gave me. The difficult part of writing a book on contemplative prayer and life is that you have to capture the un-capturable and write about the un-writable.

The book is sprinkled with anecdotes and stories that helped me gain insight into the philosophy and objectives (if you can say it has an objective). It contrasts Western versus Eastern thinking and how our driven culture stands in the way of living a contemplative life. This helped me drastically in my Christian walk.

The presence of God in the land of the living.
I am a lay person, uneducated in spiritual writing, but to the sincere I can assure you that this little book will ROCK YOUR WORLD! Father Shannon uses the theme "I will walk in the presence of God in the land of the living". I had always thought that referred to the land of the Living God (i.e. someplace else- from where I am!) The author assures us that we are in the land of the living, that the desire to seek God comes from God loving us! The desire comes from God and with our assent returns to God. Fr. Shannon moves the reader gently along a path of realization from I exist because God loves me to I am a member of the Mystical body of Christ and God loves me as a son, to God is the hidden ground of love and there is a great silence in the world that burns with His love - with Himself! Jesus said"I have come to destroy the world by fire" -Fr. Shannon lifts the curtain and lets you see...The Fire!!! (FR. Shannon if you read this review -please forgive any inaccuracies - I am a fan!)
